Scarborough’s The Weeknd won Favourite R&B Artist at the People’s Choice Awards while Trini Nicky Minaj won Favourite Hip-Hop Artist and India’s Priyanka Chopra took Favourite Actress in a New TV Series.

The 42nd People’s Choice Awards honoring the best in popular culture for 2015 had some surprise winners, when they were handed out Jan. 6 at Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, including major wins by Canadians.
And, for the first time, an Indian actress, Priyanka Chopra, who has won over India, was voted the Favourite Actress in a New TV series, beating Emma Roberts, Jamie Lee Curtis, Lea Michele and Marcia Gay Harden.
The Quantico star who’s already won countless awards in India for her work in Bollywood movies, earned her first-ever Hollywood trophy. Chopra said she was “overwhelmed”.
For Favorite Music Icon, Queen of Pop Madonna edged out the likes of Paul McCartney, Prince,
Steven Tyler and Stevie Wonder.
Scarborough-born of Ethiopian heritage, Abel Makkonen Tesfaye aka The Weeknd, won Favorite R&B Artist over Chris Brown, Ciara, Janet Jackson and Ne-Yo.

Nicki Minaj
Trinidad and Tobago-born Nicky Minaj received the award for Favourite Hip-Hop Artist, beating Big Sean, Drake, Kendrick Lamar and Wiz Khalifa.
Canadian megastar Justin Bieber’s song What Do You Mean? won Favourite Song over Bad Blood by Taylor Swift featuring Kendrick Lamar; Can’t Feel My Face by The Weeknd; Love Me Like You Do by Ellie Goulding and See You Again by Wiz Khalifa featuring Charlie Puth.
Grey’s Anatomy won Favourite Network TV Drama over Empire, Gotham, How to Get Away With Murder and Scandal.
The Big Bang Theory won Favourite TV Show, beating Game of Thrones, Grey’s Anatomy, The Voice and The Walking Dead, while it also won Favourite Network TV Comedy over 2 Broke Girls, Mike & Molly, Modern Family and New Girl.
In an unusual category, Favourite Mobile Game saw Candy Crush Saga win over nominees Despicable Me: Minion Rush, Fruit Ninja, Plants vs. Zombies and Temple Run. Favourite Animated TV Show went to The Simpsons over American Dad, Bob’s Burger, Family Guy and South Park.
The Voice was the winner of Favourite Competition TV Show over America’s Got Talent, American Ninja Warrior, Dancing with the Stars and MasterChef.
Favourite Daytime TV Host was won by Ellen DeGeneres. She received more votes over Dr. Oz, Rachael Ray, Steve Harvey, and Wendy Williams.
For film lovers, Furious 7 edged out Avengers: Age of Ultron, Inside Out, Jurassic World and Pitch Perfect 2 for Favourite Movie.
For Favourite Daytime TV Hosting Team, The Talk received the most votes over Good Morning America, Live with Kelly and Michael, Today and The View.
