T&T, Canada sign agreements

Prime Minister Stephen Harper entertains Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on the steelplan at Parliament Hill in Ottawa during the latter’s official visit to Canada last week. Both Prime Ministers later met members of the community at a reception at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto, where they announced an agreement between Brock University in Ontario and the University of Trinidad and Tobago to pursue partnerships and exchange opportunities between the two universities. “I look forward with interest and excitement to the endless possibilities this partnership promises,” said the visiting Prime Minister. “I am confident that this collaboration will further deepen and strengthen the ongoing relationship between our two nations.” Both countries also signed a memorandum of understanding to develop projects in defence and security that will help build military capability in the Caribbean. In this area, Persad-Bissessar launched negotiations on behalf of the country’s Air Guard with Canadian aircraft manufacturer Provincial Aerospace to buy two refurbished long range aircraft to help in the fight against drug traffickers. Persad-Bissessar was the first Trinidadian Prime Minister to visit Canada in an official capacity since 1966.
