AI glasses maker bets on Canada as smart eyewear enters mainstream conversation

Artificial intelligence has already transformed the way Canadians use smartphones, search for information and communicate with one another. The next technological shift, however, may be moving from people’s pockets to their faces.

At a recent launch event in Richmond Hill, technology company Rokid unveiled its latest generation of artificial intelligence-powered glasses, introducing a product that company executives believe could change the way people interact with information in their everyday lives. The gathering brought together technology specialists, healthcare professionals, optometrists and business leaders to explore how smart eyewear could influence industries ranging from healthcare and education to retail and tourism.
“We are not just talking about a pair of glasses,” said Zoro Xiao, vice-president and global general manager of Rokid Group. “We are talking about a more natural way to interact with information and make artificial intelligence a seamless part of daily life.”
Founded more than a decade ago, Rokid has focused on developing new forms of human-computer interaction by combining artificial intelligence, voice control, computer vision and wearable technology. According to company officials, its products are now available in more than 160 countries and regions.
The company’s Canadian debut represents its official entry into the North American market and follows recent expansion into Europe, including France and Germany. To support Canadian customers, Rokid has partnered with Markham-based Ming’s Optical to provide prescription lenses and fitting services. The company says some customers may even qualify for insurance reimbursement, depending on their coverage.

Unlike traditional eyewear, the new smart glasses combine multiple technologies into a lightweight frame. Users can access navigation, weather updates, voice commands, note-taking tools and real-time translation while keeping their hands free. The device also incorporates cameras and artificial intelligence assistants, allowing wearers to search for information or capture photos without reaching for a phone.
One of the product’s most heavily promoted features is its ability to translate conversations in real time. Rokid executives noted that Canada, one of the world’s most linguistically diverse countries, provides an ideal environment for technology designed to break down communication barriers.
“Canada is among the world’s most linguistically diverse countries, with over 400 languages spoken in communities from coast to coast,” Xiao said. “Whether it’s strengthening collaborations or making new friends, Rokid Glasses are designed to reduce language barriers with real-time AI translation.”
The system currently supports translation in 89 languages and allows users to choose between artificial intelligence assistants such as Google Gemini and ChatGPT. Company representatives believe the technology could prove particularly valuable for newcomers, international students, tourists and business travellers navigating unfamiliar environments.

Healthcare emerged as one of the most promising applications discussed during the launch. Company officials suggested that AI-powered glasses could help bridge communication gaps between patients and healthcare providers by offering live translation, appointment transcription and navigation assistance inside hospitals.
Technology author and innovation expert Jim Harris said the devices could become especially useful during medical appointments, when patients often struggle to remember important details following serious diagnoses.
He explained that smart glasses could potentially record conversations and generate transcripts for later review while also helping people with hearing impairments isolate voices in noisy environments.
Dr. Stephanie Ramdass, founder and clinical director of Eye Academy in Mississauga, offered practical examples from patients who had already tested the technology. She described how one hearing-impaired user found conversations easier by relying on the glasses’ captioning functions, while another patient suffering from advanced glaucoma used the device to identify medications more accurately.
Despite the excitement surrounding the technology, Ramdass cautioned that artificial intelligence should complement rather than replace human expertise.
“I think this is more augmented intelligence than artificial intelligence,” she said. “The technology should enhance human abilities rather than replace them.”
Accessibility has become a central theme in Rokid’s vision. The company has adopted the slogan “Leave nobody behind,” emphasizing that the technology is intended not only for technology enthusiasts but also for seniors, immigrants and people living with visual or hearing impairments. Features such as speech-to-text captioning, object recognition and text-reading tools are designed to help users overcome barriers in everyday situations.
Still, important questions remain.
Privacy concerns continue to represent one of the biggest obstacles to widespread adoption. Cameras and microphones built into wearable devices have raised concerns about consent, surveillance and data security. Company representatives insist that photos and videos remain stored locally on users’ devices and that visible indicator lights alert people whenever recording is taking place.
Another challenge is physical comfort. Current smart glasses remain heavier than conventional eyewear because they must accommodate batteries, cameras, processors and speakers. Executives acknowledged that advances in battery technology and display systems will be essential before the devices become as commonplace as smartphones.
Even so, supporters believe the technology has reached a critical moment. Developers are encouraging software creators to build applications for retail, education and manufacturing, hoping that practical everyday uses will accelerate adoption.
Whether smart glasses will eventually replace smartphones remains uncertain. For now, advocates argue that their greatest value lies in making everyday tasks easier, helping people communicate across cultures and providing new ways to access information.
As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly woven into daily life, the question may no longer be whether Canadians will embrace wearable technology, but how quickly it will become part of the ordinary Canadian experience.
