Air Canada Partnership Expands Caribbean Travel Options

InterCaribbean Air Canada Agreement Expands Regional Access

Air travel across the Caribbean and Canada is set for a significant boost following a new commercial partnership designed to simplify connections and widen passenger choice across the region.

Inter Caribbean Airlines

interCaribbean Airways has confirmed the launch of an interline agreement with Air Canada, a move that will link its regional network with one of North America’s largest carriers through hubs in Barbados and Antigua and Barbuda.

The arrangement is expected to streamline journeys for passengers travelling between the Caribbean and Canada by allowing a single ticket for connecting services. Travellers will be able to access Air Canada routes to major cities including Toronto and Montreal, while also connecting onward through interCaribbean’s island network. Ticket sales under the agreement have already begun.

A key feature of the partnership is through baggage handling, with customers able to check luggage once for their entire journey. Full implementation of integrated check in services is expected to follow in the coming weeks, further reducing travel complexity for passengers moving between carriers.

Airlines involved in the agreement say the initiative is designed to respond to sustained demand from Canada’s large Caribbean diaspora, particularly in Toronto and Montreal, while also improving access for Canadian tourists seeking travel across multiple island destinations.

Executives from both carriers described the arrangement as a step forward in improving regional mobility and service efficiency, noting that better connectivity remains central to passenger expectations in long haul and multi stop travel.

Headquartered in the Turks and Caicos Islands, interCaribbean Airways operates a mixed fleet that includes Embraer ERJ145 and Bombardier CRJ900 aircraft, alongside turboprops such as the ATR 72, ATR 42, Embraer EMB120 and De Havilland Twin Otter. The airline currently serves 24 cities across 18 countries, stretching from Georgetown in the south of its network to Havana in the west, Nassau in the north and Barbados in the east.

For its part, Air Canada is the country’s largest airline and operates services across six continents. A founding member of the Star Alliance, it provides global connectivity through an extensive international network.

The carrier traces its origins to Trans Canada Air Lines, which launched its first flight on 1 September 1937. It became Canada’s national airline in 1964 before adopting the Air Canada name, and was fully privatised in 1989.

Industry observers say the new agreement reflects a broader trend of airlines strengthening partnerships to improve regional feed into global hubs, particularly in markets where diaspora travel and tourism demand continue to shape route development.
