America needs Biden

at the swearing-in ceremony in Washington DC
So Donald Trump, the former real estate tycoon and reality show host, is now out of the White House.
And we say good riddance to the racist, the bully, the liar, the leader of the recent attempted coup in Washington.
We hope that the White House has been thoroughly scrubbed and that the stench of Trumpism has been finally removed from the old building as we in the Caribbean community look forward to a new dispensation south of the border.
Today many in our own community are rejoicing over the fact that Joseph R. Biden Jr. is the new president of the United States and our Kamala Devi. Harris is Vice President.
Many of us, immigrants, with relatives and friends in the United States, have good reason to celebrate the inauguration of Biden and Harris.
Biden has already proposed to give the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States a chance to become citizens in as little as eight years.
Many of us know some of these undocumented immigrants who have been living in limbo for the longest while.and we breath a sigh of relief that the day will soon come when they will no longer be forced to live in the shadows but will be able to lift their heads high, knowing that they are “straight.”
As we understand it, the plan would put millions of qualifying immigrants in a temporary status for five years and then grant them a green card once they meet certain requirements such as a background check and payment of taxes. And they would be able to apply for citizenship three years later.
Thankfully, the rabid, racist attack on immigration in the United States during the last four year is over.
But let us not lose sight of the fact that Joe, as the new president is affectionately called by friends and supporters, has entered the White House at a difficult time in the history of the United States.
On Trump’s final day in office the death toll from the coroavirus exceded 400, 000 in the United States. Many of these lives could have been saved. Trump’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic was tragically disappointing.
Binden plans to speed up the vaccine rollout which he called “a dismal failure” and has called on Americans to end the pandemic by wearing masks and keeping up social distancing.
He also has to deal with another major problem – race hate.
Trump has left the country deeply divided and Biden is now faced with a major task of trying to promote unity in what is still called the United States. Not an easy job.
But America needs him at this time.
