Andre De Grasse, Brenda Okorogba appointed to the Order of Canada

Two Canadians with deep ties to the African Caribbean Canadian community were among the distinguished group appointed to the Order of Canada 2025, one of the nation’s highest honours. Track and field star Andre De Grasse and equity advocate Brenda Okorogba were recognized for their contributions to sport and social change, bringing renewed attention to excellence rooted in diverse Canadian heritage.

The announcements came as Governor General Mary Simon appointed 80 new Members, Officers and Companions to the Order, celebrating achievements that have enriched Canadian life across multiple sectors. De Grasse and Okorogba’s inclusion highlighted the impact of African Canadian leaders in both athletics and community development.

Born in Scarborough and raised in Ontario, De Grasse emerged as one of Canada’s most accomplished sprinters, winning seven Olympic medals over three Games, including gold in the 200 metre and relays. His athletic success made him a national figure, inspiring young athletes from diverse backgrounds. Off the track he became known for his philanthropy and mentorship of youth, using his platform to advocate for opportunity and community engagement. His appointment to the Order of Canada was recognition of both his sporting legacy and broader contributions to Canadian society.

Brenda Okorogba received an honorary appointment in recognition of her work advancing equitable access to education and employment for diverse communities. Based in Ottawa, Okorogba built a career as a learning facilitator and program designer committed to breaking down systemic barriers. She successfully mobilized scholarships and resources that helped individuals from a variety of socio cultural backgrounds pursue personal and professional growth. Her work in equity centred program design and resource mobilization earned her respect as a leader on the national stage.

The Order of Canada appointment underscored how leadership and service take many forms. For De Grasse it acknowledged the power of athletic achievement to unite and inspire, while Okorogba’s honour celebrated sustained efforts to create access and opportunity. Both appointees exemplified the Order’s motto DESIDERANTES MELIOREM PATRIAM. They desired a better country and worked to build it.
