Antigua deploys harvester to combat sargassum seaweed

Antigua and Barbuda has unveiled a powerful new tool in its ongoing fight against sargassum seaweed, with the arrival of a custom-built Aquatic Plant Harvester, provided through support from the Japan International Cooperation System.

The harvester, which will be operated by the Antigua and Barbuda Coast Guard, is designed to intercept and remove sargassum before it reaches the country’s vulnerable coastlines. This proactive approach marks a shift in national strategy, aimed at preserving beaches, minimizing erosion, and protecting marine ecosystems from the damaging effects of the invasive seaweed.

Indira James-Henry, General Manager of the National Solid Waste Management Authority, described the arrival of the vessel as a major step forward. She explained that the harvester forms part of a broader project initiated through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with earlier phases providing essential equipment such as oil fences, dump trucks, and manual tools.

Built specifically for the country’s maritime conditions, the vessel has a floating storage capacity for seven units and can carry up to 7,500 kilograms. Trained Coast Guard captains will pilot the machine, ensuring that clean-up operations are efficient and coordinated.

“This equipment allows us to move from reactive beach clean-ups to proactive sea-based interception,” said James-Henry. “With the sargassum season approaching, it gives us a critical advantage in safeguarding our shoreline.”

While the harvester is expected to improve short-term clean-up efforts, the government is also exploring long-term solutions for sargassum use, including converting it into agricultural fertilizer and supplying it to cosmetics manufacturers.

As climate pressures continue to increase the frequency of sargassum influxes, officials say investments like this represent the country’s broader commitment to environmental resilience and sustainable resource management.
