Planning for Black History Month in York Region is taking a new turn as two neighbouring organizations prepare to share the spotlight for the first time.
The Aurora Black Community Association and the Newmarket African Caribbean Canadian Association revealed that they will co host a Black History Month Gala on Saturday Feb. 7 2026. The formal celebration will take place at the Royal Venetian Mansion in Aurora and marks the first collaborative event of its kind between the two groups.
“This collaboration has been years in the making, a dream and a vision finally coming to life,” said Phiona Durrant president of ABC. “We’re thrilled to celebrate unity culture and legacy with our incredible community.”
Organizers say the gala will serve as the centrepiece of the newly established Newmarket Aurora Black History Month Commemoration. The inter municipal initiative has received support from both the Town of Aurora and the Town of Newmarket reflecting a shared commitment to inclusive programming across municipal boundaries.
The evening is expected to include live performances guest speakers and formal tributes recognizing the contributions of African Canadians past and present. Organizers also emphasized accessibility noting that some tickets will be offered at no cost to long time supporters of Black cultural initiatives in the area.
“This partnership reflects the essence of Umoja (unity) and Ujima (collective work and responsibility),” the statement continued. “It’s a testament to what we can achieve together honouring our shared history and carrying forward the promise of a future built on connection and Pan African pride.”
