The Toronto-based Black Action Defense Committee (BADC) is calling for “government intervention ” to ensure that radio station G98.7-FM remains under Black ownership.
In a news release, BADC says it’s alarmed at the prospect that the Toronto station, “the Black community’s voice in culture, entertainment, news and our stories,” could change hands ” within a week.”
Intercity Broadcasting Network, the Black-owned company that operates G98.7-FM which was placed in “investigative receivership” in June last year, has been ordered by an Ontario Court to be sold.
BADC says this is a “huge blow” to the Black community that has suffered from systemic and anti-Black racism in every aspect of life in Canada, from its founding.”
It notes that the outstanding debts that triggered the court ordered sale of the Black-owned radio station is just a few million dollars.
” We, the Black community, have been exceptionally well represented by and are proud of the contributions of G98.7- FM to community life and implore all three levels of Government – federal, provincial and municipal to intervene in this sale and ensure that it remains under Black ownership,” said the news release.
