The City of Brampton’s Black Empowerment Unit is set to honour Black History Month this February with a series of events celebrating the achievements, culture, and legacy of Black Canadians.

Throughout the month, the unit will host and support educational programs, performances, and activities highlighting the impact of the Black community on the city’s development and cultural diversity.

The celebrations will kick off on February 1 with a special lighting of the Brampton City Hall Clock Tower at 2 Wellington St. W. The tower will be illuminated in red, yellow, and green, symbolizing the beginning of Black History Month.

A key highlight of the month is the “Standing on the Shoulders of Giants – Black Youth Making History” event on February 2 at The Rose Brampton. Running from 4 to 9:30 p.m., this initiative will feature youth performances, a fireside chat with actor and activist Danny Glover, and remarks from dignitaries, including Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown. The evening will also honour former Ontario cabinet minister Zanana Akande and recognize 100 youth leaders with special awards.

A VIP reception will precede the event, with limited tickets available. Upper-level seating is priced at $10 and $20, while lower-level tickets, which include access to the exclusive pre-event reception with Glover, are available for $100. Tickets can be purchased online at Brampton On Stage or in person at The Rose Box Office.

Residents are encouraged to participate in the month-long celebrations, which aim to recognize and uplift the contributions of Brampton’s Black community.
