HAVANA, Cuba – The prestigious Cuban band Buena Vista Social Club performed at the Beacon Theatre in New York City as part of its farewell tour through the U.S.
According to Prensa Latina news agency, last month the Cuban band and its lead singer Omara Portuondo performed at the White House, the first Cuban-based orchestra to do so in over half a century.
They have already performed concerts at the Hollywood Bowl, Humphreys Concerts by the Bay, Denver Botanic Gardens and Rialto Centre for the Arts, among others.
The band, created in 1996, is made up of well-known Cuban musicians, who recorded a Grammy-winning CD with American producer Ry Cooder and a documentary nominated for an Oscar in 2000.
The farewell tour started last year, and marks the end of a highly successful career worldwide.
