In a thrilling development for reggae enthusiasts worldwide, the legendary Burning Spear, born Winston Rodney, has secured a nomination in the Best Reggae Album category at the upcoming 66th Grammy Awards for his latest masterpiece, “No Destroyer.”
Released in August under the banner of Burning Spear Music Inc, this 12-track album is more than just another musical offering; it represents a decade of dedication and artistry. The album is a testament to the enduring creativity of the reggae icon, whose early musical influences included R&B, soul, and jazz from American radio stations that reached his native Jamaica. Curtis Mayfield and James Brown are cited as major influences, but it was the profound teachings of political activist Marcus Garvey that truly shaped his worldview, emphasizing Pan-Africanism and self-determination.
Burning Spear expressed his gratitude and excitement about the Grammy nomination, saying, “It truly means a lot to be nominated, and I am humbled and grateful.” He went on to reflect on the emotional journey behind “No Destroyer,” stating, “A lot of emotions went into this album. Jah’s work must be done no matter what. I had to go deep within myself as times and things changed.”
Produced by Burning Spear and his wife Sonia Rodney, “No Destroyer” was finally completed in 2022. The album features tracks such as “Independent,” “Jamaica,” “Cure for Cancer,” “Obsession,” “Open the Gate,” “No Fool,” and “They Think.”
This marks Burning Spear’s impressive 13th nomination in the Best Reggae Album category, with previous wins in 2000 and 2009. When asked about the nomination at this stage of his illustrious career, he responded, “Jah’s work must be done, and as long as the Most High rewards me, so be it. I feel good to be nominated again because it shows that the Spear is still burning from 1969 until this time, with big love and maximum respect to my fans all over and far over.”
Burning Spear believes that the message conveyed in “No Destroyer” is relatable and should resonate deeply with his fans. This nomination reaffirms his position as a reggae legend and a force to be reckoned with in the music industry.
The 66th Grammy Awards ceremony is scheduled for February 4, 2023, and will be hosted at the Crypto.com Arena in California. Burning Spear faces strong competition in the Best Reggae Album category, with fellow nominees including Collie Buddz for “Cali Roots Riddim,” Julian Marley and Antaeus for “Colors of Royal,” Beenie Man for “Simma,” and Buju Banton for “Born for Greatness.” The reggae world eagerly anticipates the outcome as Burning Spear seeks his third Grammy win.
