Calypsonian Singing Sandra dies at 64

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad –   Singing Sandra (Sandra DesVignes-Millington), a two-time Trinidad calypso monarch, died last Thursday. She was 64.

Her death was announced on her social media page. No cause of death was given.

Singing Sandra was born in East Dry River, Port of Spain and  grew up  in Morvant. From an early age, she started singing and performed in Trinidad an d Tobago “Best Village” productions.

In 1985, she joined the Mighty Sparrow’s Youth Brigade calypso tent and won the National Calypso Queen title in 1987.

She went on  to win the Carifesta Monarch and Calypso Queen of the World titles in 1992.

And in 1993 and 2003, she won the Trinidad and Tobago calypso monarch title.

Her popular social commentaries included Sexy Employees (Die With My Dignity), Voices From The Ghetto and Nobody Wins A War.
