The event, themed “Family – Home – Community, 30 years Strong,” will be held from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the housing complex, located at 4983 Rathkeale Road.

The organization traces its origins to “Suffering in Silence,” a research project undertaken by members of the Congress of Black Women of Canada’s Mississauga and Area Chapter to examine the social and economic needs of women in Peel.

An initial housing proposal submitted to the Ministry of Housing in 1994 was rejected. Members regrouped with community stakeholders and submitted a revised application in 1995. It received the highest score among Ontario submissions.

The project was completed and officially opened in 1996 by then Mississauga mayor Hazel McCallion, with support from the NDP provincial government.

The building was named after Camille Newman, a young Congress member who died before pursuing university.
