Rogers smashes record in Glasgow triumph

Canadian hammer thrower Camryn Rogers successfully defended her Commonwealth Games title Tuesday, delivering a record breaking performance in Glasgow to add another gold medal to an already remarkable collection of international honours.

The Richmond, B.C., athlete, who entered the competition as the reigning Olympic, world and Commonwealth champion, produced a throw of 74.91 metres on her final attempt to establish a new Commonwealth Games record. The mark surpassed the record she previously held and capped a dominant display in difficult, rain soaked conditions at Scotstoun Stadium.

“For tonight with the rain and so much going on in this stadium, it means so much,” Rogers said. “To come out here knowing that I have the training to compete in these conditions, that you train for such a big chunk of your life to prepare for moments like this, and to get the job done when it matters the most, I think everything falls into place.”

Rogers took control of the competition from the outset with an opening throw of 71.52 metres. She had already secured the gold medal before stepping into the circle for her final attempt, but still produced the winning record.

“I’m super proud of myself, proud for the work my coach and I have done to make this happen,” she said.

Rogers’ victory highlighted another successful day for Canada at the Commonwealth Games. Noah Vucsics of Calgary earned silver in the men’s T20 long jump with a season best leap of 6.66 metres, becoming Canada’s first Commonwealth Games medallist in the event.

In the pool, Kylie Masse claimed gold in the women’s 50 metre backstroke in 27.32 seconds for her 11th career Commonwealth Games medal. Lorne Wigginton captured bronze in the men’s 400 metre individual medley, Nicolas Guy Turbide won bronze in the men’s 50 metre freestyle S13 final, Oliver Dawson collected silver in the men’s 200 metre breaststroke with a Canadian record of 2:08.39 and Sophie Angus also reached the podium in the women’s 50 metre breaststroke.

Gymnast Félix Dolci continued his outstanding Games by winning gold on the horizontal bar and bronze on the parallel bars, raising his medal total to six. William Émard earned bronze on the horizontal bar, while Lia Monica Fontaine claimed bronze on the balance beam.

Weightlifter Maude Charron secured her third consecutive Commonwealth Games title in the women’s 63 kilogram division, setting Games records in the snatch, clean and jerk and total lift.
