Canadian Olympic gold medalist Andre De Grasse, hailing from Scarborough, Ontario, sprinted his way to victory in the men’s 200 meters at the 2023 Diamond League Final, held in Eugene, Oregon last Sunday. This remarkable feat marked one of three medals claimed by Canadian athletes during the prestigious Diamond League Final. The impressive showcase of Canadian talent continued with Sarah Mitton of Liverpool, Nova Scotia, securing the silver medal in women’s shot put on the previous Saturday, while Marco Arop from Edmonton, Alberta, clinched the silver in the men’s 800 meters on the same eventful Sunday.
De Grasse, who previously clinched the gold medal in the men’s 200 meters at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo (which occurred in 2021), displayed his remarkable prowess by achieving a season-best time of 19.76 seconds. It’s worth noting that his Olympic triumph in 2021 was accompanied by a slightly faster time of 19.62 seconds. The silver medal in this race was claimed by Kenneth Bednarek of the United States, who clocked in at 19.95 seconds.
Meanwhile, Mitton’s remarkable throw of 19.94 meters earned her a well-deserved silver medal, though Chase Ealey of the United States secured the gold with an impressive 20.76-meter throw. Auriol Dongmo of Portugal rounded off the podium with a bronze medal, propelled by her throw of 19.92 meters.

Arop’s performance was nothing short of extraordinary, as he not only secured a silver medal but also set a new personal best and Canadian record with a remarkable time of 1:42.85 in the men’s 800 meters. Although he narrowly missed the gold, which was claimed by Emmanuel Wanyonyi of Kenya with a time of 1:42.80, Arop’s achievement was a significant milestone. Djamel Sedjati of Algeria secured the bronze medal with a time of 1:43.06, while the previous Canadian record, held by Brandon McBride of Windsor, Ontario, was set at 1:43.20 during a Diamond League event in Monaco on July 20, 2018, earning him a silver medal.
This exceptional gold medal victory by De Grasse marked the first Canadian triumph in the Diamond League Finals since Canadian Olympic bronze medalist Dylan Armstrong, representing Kamloops, British Columbia, secured victory in the 2011 Diamond League Finals held in Brussels, Belgium. Armstrong’s earlier Olympic achievement occurred at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing when he claimed the bronze medal. The medals earned over the weekend by De Grasse, Arop, and Mitton are a testament to their dedication and skill, instilling confidence as they embark on their journey to prepare for the highly anticipated 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
