Millions Raised in Canada for Jamaica Relief

Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, has hailed the extraordinary leadership and generosity of the Jamaican Canadian diaspora after more than CAD$3 million was raised to support relief and recovery efforts following Hurricane Melissa, one of the most severe storms to strike the island in recent history.

Speaking in Toronto on Thursday, December 11, 2025, Minister Bartlett expressed deep gratitude for the swift and sustained response from Jamaicans living in Canada, whose fundraising initiatives have delivered critical assistance to communities across Jamaica grappling with the storm’s aftermath. The funds raised will contribute to urgent humanitarian needs as well as longer-term rebuilding efforts, including housing, infrastructure, and livelihoods for families hit hardest by the hurricane.

“The outpouring of support from our Canadian diaspora has been nothing short of inspirational,” Bartlett said. “When our island called for help, our Jamaican family in Canada answered with leadership, compassion, and considerable contributions that are already making a real difference in people’s lives.”

Central to the fundraising effort was a series of benefit events and community-driven campaigns that mobilized Jamaicans and friends of Jamaica across the country. An early benefit concert held on November 6 at the Jamaican Canadian Association (JCA) in Toronto raised more than $51,000. That momentum was quickly amplified by an online fundraising drive which generated over $650,000 within just two weeks, underscoring the urgency felt by the diaspora and their determination to act.

The most significant contribution to date came through the Harmonies of Hope benefit concert, held at the Meridian Performing Arts Centre in Toronto. The event attracted hundreds of attendees, including members of the Canadian travel industry, community leaders, and supporters of Jamaica, and has raised an estimated CAD$2.3 million and counting.

Held under the patronage of Dr. Wes Hall, Chancellor of the University of Toronto, and Dr. Donette Chin-Loy Chang, Chancellor of Toronto Metropolitan University, Harmonies of Hope brought together music, community, and purpose in a powerful expression of solidarity. The concert partnered with three humanitarian agencies—Food for the Poor Canada, the Sandals Foundation, and the Helping Hands Jamaica Foundation—to ensure that funds raised would be efficiently directed to relief efforts on the ground.

Minister Bartlett noted that the coordinated response demonstrated the enduring bond between Jamaica and its diaspora abroad. “We are humbled and heartened by the generosity of our brothers and sisters in Canada,” he said. “This shared commitment reinforces the enduring love for Jamaica that our diaspora carries with them—and proves that distance cannot weaken the ties that bind us.”

JCA members, along with other diaspora organizations across Canada, have worked tirelessly in recent weeks to coordinate fundraising, outreach, and logistics, often volunteering long hours to ensure the success of each initiative. Their efforts, Bartlett emphasized, are aligned with Jamaica’s national recovery strategy and will play a critical role in stabilizing affected communities while supporting long-term resilience.

Donovan White, Jamaica’s Director of Tourism, also applauded the diaspora’s response, highlighting the “positive impact the relief will have on many lives” as recovery efforts continue. Angella Bennett, Regional Director for Canada, who played an integral role in the execution of Harmonies of Hope, praised the concert’s stakeholders for delivering an exceptional production that “indeed brought hope through Jamaica’s powerful musical renditions of Bob Marley songs.”

As Jamaica continues to recover from Hurricane Melissa, the support flowing from Canada stands as a testament to the strength, organization, and compassion of the diaspora. Beyond the funds raised, the collective effort has reaffirmed a shared sense of responsibility and belonging—one that continues to bridge borders in times of crisis.
