Caribbean Stars Dominate London Diamond League

Caribbean athletes shine at London Diamond League

Caribbean athletes delivered standout performances at the London Diamond League on Saturday, leaving a strong mark on a stacked program at the Olympic Stadium.

Jamaica’s Oblique Seville powered to victory in the Men’s 100m, making an emphatic statement in his first Diamond League final. Seville burst from the blocks and never looked back, crossing the line in 9.86 seconds. American sprint star Noah Lyles, slowest out of the blocks, closed fast but had to settle for second in 10.00. Great Britain’s Zharnel Hughes finished third with 10.02, while Jamaica’s Ackeem Blake placed fourth in 10.08.

Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred continued her stellar season with a commanding win in the Women’s 200m. After cruising through the curve, Alfred stormed down the home straight to clock a national record of 21.71. British sprinters Dina Asher-Smith (22.25) and Amy Hunt (22.31) rounded out the podium. Jamaica’s Ashanti Moore finished seventh in 22.86.

Oblique Seville

In the Men’s Long Jump, Jamaica’s Wayne Pinnock edged Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece by a single centimetre with a leap of 8.20m. Carey McLeod, also of Jamaica, secured third place with a jump of 8.10m, completing a Caribbean one-three finish.

In the Men’s Discus Throw, Lithuania’s Mykolas Alekna dominated with a massive 71.70m effort. Jamaica’s Roje Stona placed fifth with a throw of 64.71m.

The Women’s 400m Hurdles saw world leader Femke Bol of the Netherlands win in 52.10. Jamaica’s Andrenette Knight took third in 53.79, while teammate Janieve Russell faded to eighth, clocking 1:00.55.

Wayne Pinnock

In the Women’s 800m, Great Britain’s Georgia Bell took the win in 1:56.74. Caribbean representatives Shafiqua Maloney of St. Vincent and the Grenadines (1:58.47) and Jamaica’s Natoya Goule-Toppin (1:59.27) finished fifth and eighth, respectively.

Great Britain’s Morgan Lake triumphed in the Women’s High Jump, clearing 1.96m. Jamaica’s Lamara Distin tied for seventh with a clearance of 1.85m.

Capping the meet in style, Jamaica’s men stormed to victory in the 4x100m relay. The team of Rohan Watson, Oblique Seville, Kadrian Goldson, and Kishane Thompson clocked 37.80 to finish ahead of Great Britain (38.08) and the Netherlands (38.17).
