Caribbean athletes showcased their prowess at the Wanda Diamond League in Doha, Qatar, with Bahamian 400m Olympic Champion Steven Gardiner and Jamaican long jump finalist Carey McLeod seizing victory in their respective events.
McLeod, who had previously finished fourth at the Xiamen meet, demonstrated significant improvement to claim the top spot in the men’s long jump with a wind-aided leap of 8.52m. Overcoming a shaky start, McLeod clinched victory on his fourth attempt, surpassing Greece’s Olympic and World champion Miltiadis Tentoglou. Bahamian LaQuan Nairn also delivered a commendable performance, securing eighth place.
In the men’s 400m, Gardiner continued his stellar early season form, dominating the race with a time of 44.76 seconds. Leading from lane five, Gardiner maintained his position throughout, leaving Zambia’s Muzala Samukonga and Botswana’s Leungo Scotch trailing in second and third, respectively.
Grenada’s Anderson Peters secured third place in the men’s javelin throw, displaying exceptional skill amidst tough competition. Despite challenges from India’s Neeraj Chopra and Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch, Peters achieved a season’s best throw of 86.62m.
The men’s 400m hurdles witnessed a breathtaking performance from Brazil’s Alison Dos Santos, who set a World Lead and Meet Record with an astonishing time of 46.86 seconds. In the women’s 800m, Jamaican Natoya Goule-Toppin showcased determination, finishing sixth with a season’s best time of 1:59.74 minutes.
Amidst stiff competition in the men’s 200m, Jamaican Oshane Hudson clocked a season’s best of 20.53 seconds to secure seventh place. American Olympic silver medallist Kenny Bednarek dominated the event, setting a personal best and world-leading time of 19.67 seconds, establishing a new Meet Record.
British sprinter Daryll Neita claimed victory in the women’s 100m with a season’s best time of 10.98 seconds, closely followed by American athletes Tamari Davis and Celera Barnes. Jamaican Nata Jamaican Natasha Morrison delivered a season’s best performance, finishing seventh with a time of 11.37 seconds.
