Caribbean Games to be held in 2021 despite postponement of Tokyo Olympics

The Caribbean Games will  be held  in 2021 despite the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympiuc Games., Keith Joseph, secretary general of the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC) has confirmed.

The inaugural Caribbean Games are scheduled to take place in Guade­loupe from June 30 to July 4 2021.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics were postponed until July 23 to August 8 and August 24 to September 5 (in 2021) respectively.

Despite the close proximity to the Tokyo Olympics, Joseph said the dates of the Caribbean Games, an under-23 competition, will not change.

Guade­loupe had been awarded the hosting rights of the Caribbean Games in January.

An inaugural edition had been scheduled to be held in Trinidad and Tobago as far back as July 2009 but this was cancelled  due to the global spread of the novel influenza A virus
