Jamaica and Trinidad officials join World Cup roster
A pair of Caribbean officials will take their place on football’s biggest stage when the 2026 FIFA World Cup begins, marking a notable moment for regional representation in the sport’s officiating ranks.

Oshane Nation of Jamaica has been appointed as a centre referee, while Caleb Wales of Trinidad and Tobago will serve as an assistant referee. Their selection places them among officials chosen for FIFA’s “Team One,” the group responsible for overseeing matches at the tournament.
Both officials arrive with extensive experience. Nation has worked at competitions including the CONCACAF Gold Cup and the FIFA Under 20 World Cup, while Wales has built a record of steady performances across regional and international fixtures. Their appointments reflect FIFA’s emphasis on performance standards and consistency in high level matches.
The governing body, FIFA, confirmed that 170 match officials have been selected for the tournament, the largest pool ever assembled for a World Cup. The group represents 50 countries and spans all six confederations, underscoring the global scale of the competition.

Referees committee chairman Pierluigi Collina said the final list was drawn from a wider group monitored over three years. “The selected match officials are the very best in the world,” he stated, noting that candidates underwent regular assessments at both domestic and international levels and participated in FIFA seminars and tournaments.
Collina also outlined the preparation programme designed to support the officials ahead of kickoff. “The selected officials have received, and will continue to receive, comprehensive support from our fitness coaches and medical staff, including physiotherapists and a mental health specialist,” he said, adding that the aim is to ensure peak readiness by the time they arrive in Miami on May 31.
The 2026 edition of the World Cup will feature 48 teams and 104 matches across North America, making it the largest tournament in the competition’s history. Collina pointed out that this expansion has driven a corresponding increase in officiating personnel, with 41 more match officials than were involved in Qatar 2022.
