Caribbean Tourism Organization Advocates Climate Resilience at COP29

BAKU, Azerbaijan (November 19, 2024) – The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) is taking the fight for climate resilience to the world stage at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, addressing the unique challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Representing 44.5 million residents across the region, the CTO will advocate for stronger global action to combat rising sea levels, beach erosion, and increasingly intense hurricanes that threaten Caribbean tourism—the economic backbone of the region.

“Tourism is the heartbeat of the Caribbean, yet we are among the most vulnerable to climate change,” stated Dona Regis-Prosper, Secretary-General & CEO of CTO. “Our presence at COP29 is crucial to advancing climate-resilient tourism and ensuring global climate strategies address our unique challenges.”

The CTO’s advocacy aligns with frameworks like the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism, emphasizing sustainable tourism practices, renewable energy adoption, and climate-resilient infrastructure. On November 20, the organization will host a high-level session featuring Ministers of Tourism, calling for increased funding, policy support, and global collaboration to protect tourism-dependent economies.

The CTO’s proactive efforts aim to balance economic development with environmental stewardship, underscoring that the Caribbean’s vulnerability is a global issue requiring urgent action.
