Carney calls for unity on Canada Day

Prime Minister Mark Carney marked Canada Day with a message centred on unity, nation-building and confidence in the country’s future, encouraging Canadians to continue strengthening the nation through shared values and collective action.

Carney described Canada as a country stretching across three oceans, six time zones and nearly 10 million square kilometres, but said its greatest strength lies in the people who call it home. He said Canadians have always demonstrated that they are strongest when they work together.

Reflecting on milestones such as Confederation in 1867, the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway and the opening of the Trans-Canada Highway, the Prime Minister said each represented moments when Canadians chose to build something greater than themselves.

He said the country now stands at another important moment in its history, calling on Canadians to support Canadian workers, purchase Canadian-made products, choose locally grown food and rediscover the country’s remarkable landscapes and communities.

Carney said these everyday acts of solidarity demonstrate that Canadians can accomplish far more together than any outside force could diminish. While acknowledging that there will always be attempts to divide the country, he emphasized that Canada’s diversity remains one of its greatest strengths and that unity does not require uniformity.

Ending on an optimistic note, the Prime Minister encouraged Canadians to continue showing kindness and compassion toward one another.

“When we show kindness, kindness grows. When we seek unity, unity grows. When we are Canadian, Canada grows,” he said before wishing Canadians a happy Canada Day.
