Carnival spirit fills GO trains as revellers head to Toronto parade

The excitement of Toronto Caribbean Carnival day was evident long before the first masqueraders reached Lake Shore Boulevard, as revellers from across the Greater Toronto Area began their journey into the city dressed in colourful costumes and proudly carrying the flags of their homelands.

Earlier in the day, three young women, adorned in elaborate costumes and on their way to meet their band, Tribal Carnival, boarded the GO train from Ajax. Seasoned masqueraders, the women said they were no strangers to Carnival celebrations and were eager to join thousands of participants and spectators for the annual parade, still affectionately known to many as Caribana.

They were joined by a steady stream of passengers making their way to Toronto. Among them was an African man wearing a striking black-and-white outfit, while others wrapped themselves in the colours of Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, Jamaica and several Caribbean nations.

At GO stations in Ajax and Pickering, the atmosphere resembled a festival in itself, as flags waved and anticipation grew for one of Toronto’s most vibrant celebrations.
