The ceremony, held on Tuesday, confirmed China’s commitment to finance and construct six educational institutions across Dominica, comprising five primary schools and one secondary school. The facilities will be built in several communities as part of ongoing efforts to modernise the island’s education infrastructure following the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria in 2017.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit described the agreement as “a milestone” in relations between Dominica and the People’s Republic of China. He noted that Chinese support has extended beyond education to include significant contributions to healthcare, agriculture and national development.

According to the Prime Minister, China has assisted with improving health infrastructure, constructing schools and providing training for hospital staff. “We have also received assistance in agriculture, and China continue to support with knowledge and guidance to help sustain our agriculture sector,” he said.

Skerrit stated that the government has worked steadily since Hurricane Maria to rebuild and rehabilitate schools nationwide. The latest project is expected to deliver improved facilities for residents of Thibaud, Bellvue Choppin, Seneku, Tete Monte and Calibishe.

He added that cooperation with China has also supported the construction of roads and bridges, particularly along the Edward Oliver Leblanc Highway. Both governments reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining close ties and expanding cooperation in the years ahead.
