The Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) will host its highly anticipated 35th annual awards gala on June 12 at Toronto’s Royal York Hotel, with a sold-out audience of over 500 journalists, media executives, and business leaders gathering to celebrate journalistic excellence and the vital role of a free press in democracy.

Elamin Abdelmahmoud, acclaimed host of CBC Radio’s COMMOTION, will emcee the evening. Known for his cultural insight and storytelling across platforms, Abdelmahmoud is a prominent voice in Canadian media, and his role as host underscores the evening’s blend of tradition and contemporary relevance.
The 2024 CJF Tribute will honour Tanya Talaga, a celebrated journalist, author, podcaster and filmmaker, for her extraordinary commitment to Indigenous storytelling. Her work has not only elevated Indigenous voices but has reshaped the landscape of Canadian journalism. Talaga’s tribute will be presented by fellow award-winning journalist and documentarian Michelle Shephard, and the moment will be punctuated by a special performance from Aysanabee, a Juno-winning musician whose music echoes themes of identity and resilience.
A major highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to investigative journalist Bob McKeown, whose reporting has spanned more than 60 countries. McKeown, known for his work on The Fifth Estate, has received dozens of national and international honours throughout his career. The award will be presented by Allya Davidson, executive producer of The Fifth Estate.
Other notable awards to be presented include: The CJF Award for Climate Solutions Reporting; The CJF Dr. Eric Jackman Awards for Excellence in Journalism (for both large and small media outlets); The CJF Edward Burtynsky Award for Climate Photojournalism; and The Landsberg Award, recognizing exceptional coverage of gender equality issues
The CJF will also honour recipients of a wide range of fellowships and bursaries that aim to foster the next generation of journalists, particularly those from underrepresented communities. Among these, the CJF Black Journalism Fellowships Program will be highlighted for its role in advancing diversity in Canadian newsrooms.
Additional fellowships include the CJF Bursary for BIPOC Student Journalists.
Founded in 1990, the Canadian Journalism Foundation has long been dedicated to championing professional journalism, hosting the J-Talks speaker series, and supporting journalism education, training, and research.
“This year’s awards are a tribute to the power of journalism to inform, uncover truth, and serve the public good,” said Natalie Turvey, CJF President and Executive Director. “For 35 years, we’ve celebrated those who embody these ideals, and we’re proud to continue that legacy with the support of so many passionate individuals and organizations.”
The evening promises not just recognition, but a reaffirmation of journalism’s enduring role in Canadian democracy.
