St. JOHN’S, Antigua – Claudette Peters was crowned Groovy monarch on Saturday night at the soca monarch competition here while Lyricksman won the Jumpy crown, much to the delight of the hundreds of their fans at the Antigua Recreation Ground.
No fewer than 16 of Antigua’s top soca artistes competed in the two categories of the competition – Groovy and Jumpy.
Each artiste had ten minutes to impress the judges and the large crowd which had showed up for the event.
Clearly, it was a tough decision for the judges as each of the artistes put on a remarkable performance.
Peters, emerged victorious in the Groovy category with her performance of “Stressless”.
While onstage she made an appeal for “traditional characters” to be re-introduced to Antigua and Barbuda carnival.
“We definitely need to bring back the old mas’ into our carnival. We’re losing it. We cannot afford to lose it. Tonight I’m telling the government of Antigua and Barbuda to put old mas’ back into our carnival.”
Soca veteran Tian Winter was the first runner up in the “Groovy “ category with his rendition of “Baddest” while the 2019 Groovy Monarch, Menace XL, was the second with “Brave”.
In the “Jumpy” category, artistes pulled out all the stops with many delivering theatrical performances that further ignited the audience.
Lyricksman was crowned Jumpy Monarch with his performance of “How Ma Sound”.
Menace XL was the first runner up with “Dutty Jam” and Tian Winter rounded off the top three with his performance of “Inside Out”.
