Olympian Custio Clayton Uplifts Youth Through Boxing

Olympian Custio Clayton trades boxing glory for youth mentorship

In the heart of Nova Scotia, a former Olympian is using the power of sport to uplift his community.

Custio Clayton

Custio Clayton, once a fierce competitor in the ring, is now a mentor, coach, and role model for young people across Halifax. Best known for representing Canada in the 2012 London Olympics and winning six national boxing titles, Clayton is turning his lifelong discipline into a tool for change.

Now 37, the North Preston native has shifted focus from titles to transformation. Through boxing, he’s reaching youth who face poverty, violence, and lack of support, offering them not just training, but guidance and belief in their potential.

“I know what boxing did for me,” Clayton said. “It taught me to handle pressure, take hits—literally and figuratively—and keep going. Those are life skills, and I want to pass them on.”

Clayton now runs training sessions and workshops that combine physical fitness with mental wellness. His approach emphasizes discipline, accountability, and self-worth, lessons that stretch far beyond the ring.

For many of his students, the gym is more than a workout space. It’s a refuge. A place to be seen and supported. A few of his trainees have already competed at provincial and national levels. Others have found direction, confidence, and a sense of belonging.

“Seeing someone from here who’s made it gives them hope,” he said. “It doesn’t matter where you start. It’s about how hard you’re willing to work and how much you believe in yourself.”

In a time when young people are struggling with anxiety and identity, Clayton sees boxing as a way to build resilience and inner strength.

“Boxing saved me,” he said. “Now I want it to save others.”

From Olympian to mentor, Custio Clayton continues to fight, this time, for a better future.
