Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley will add an academic distinction to his musical achievements when The University of the West Indies awards him an honorary Doctor of Letters during its Mona graduation ceremonies in November.

Marley, the youngest son of reggae icon Bob Marley and former Miss World Cindy Breakspeare, is among four Jamaicans selected for honorary degrees at ceremonies scheduled for Nov. 5 to 7. UWI will honour 13 people across its campuses during the 2026 graduation season.
The recognition follows a career in which Marley has established an international identity while extending reggae’s reach through collaborations, production and live events.
Born in Kingston in 1978, Marley began performing at 13 with The Shepherds before touring with brothers Stephen, Ky Mani, Julian and Ziggy Marley. His debut album, Mr. Marley, was released while he was still a teenager.
His 2001 album Halfway Tree brought his first Grammy for Best Reggae Album in 2002. Three years later, Welcome to Jamrock propelled him to international prominence. The album reached No. 7 on the Billboard 200 and won two Grammys in 2006.
Its title song addressed poverty, violence and inequality in Jamaica. Marley became the first and remains the only Jamaican artist to win the Grammy for Best Urban/Alternative Performance. Welcome to Jamrock was certified platinum in the United Kingdom in December 2024.
Marley later collaborated with Nas on Distant Relatives, which debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 and topped the reggae albums chart. His work with Skrillex produced “Make It Bun Dem” in 2012, while Stony Hill earned him another Grammy in 2018.
As a producer, Marley worked on Kabaka Pyramid’s The Kalling, which won the 2023 Grammy for Best Reggae Album. His Ghetto Youths International label has also promoted Jamaican talent overseas.
UWI will honour Marley alongside Arnold Bertram, Dawn Robinson Spence and Milton J. Samuda.
