The Dominican-Canadian community mourns the loss of a beloved matriarch, Theresa Cuffy (nee Paul), affectionately known as “Granny,” who passed away peacefully on September 19, 2024; she was 100. Her passing marks the end of a long life characterized by love, kindness, and devotion to her family and community.
Theresa Cuffy was born on May 11, 1924, in Grand Fond, Dominica, to parents Lilin Anselmn-Paul and Joseph Paul. She was the eldest of three daughters, growing up in a close-knit family. In 1980, she migrated to Canada, where she spent the last 43 years of her life, becoming a cherished figure within the Dominican diaspora.
A mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and second-great-grandmother, Theresa Cuffy’s legacy extends across generations. She was predeceased by two of her children, Rudy Martin and Solange Cuffy, but is survived by her daughters Francisca Cuffy and Eugenia Cuffy Ali, both residing in Canada, and her son Clifford Cuffy (along with his spouse Doreen), who reside in St. Croix. In addition to her five children, Theresa leaves behind 21 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and 19 second-great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. Her only living sibling, Iona Paul Virin, resides in Guadeloupe.
“Granny” Theresa was known for her warmth, generosity, and infectious spirit. Her bright smile and open arms welcomed everyone into her life, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew her. Whether through her free hugs, her humor, or her unwavering humility, Theresa embodied a selfless love that touched countless lives. She will be remembered as a woman who gave abundantly of herself, offering kindness and affection to all who crossed her path.
A visitation and viewing were held on Tuesday, October 1st, 2024, at the Newediuk Funeral Home in Etobicoke. Her funeral service took place on, Wednesday, October 2nd, at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, also in Etobicoke. Following the service, Theresa was laid to rest at the Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
