The Durham Community Action Group (DCAG) hosted its first-ever fundraising event, and by all accounts, it was an overwhelming success. Held during the festive season, the Christmas celebration brought together community members, leaders, and volunteers to support DCAG’s vital work in improving the quality of life for families in the Durham region.

The evening was attended by numerous dignitaries and community leaders, including representatives of Mark Holland, Member of Parliament for Ajax and Canada’s Minister of Health. Speaking on his behalf, the representative conveyed Minister Holland’s appreciation for DCAG’s dedication and impact, emphasizing the importance of collective support in building stronger, healthier, and more resilient communities.
“Tonight, we celebrate not just community, but also generosity,” the representative said. “Your contributions help ensure that DCAG’s crucial work continues. This success is a testament to the dedication of DCAG’s staff, volunteers, and supporters.”
DCAG’s founder, Gloria Small-Clarke, received high praise for her leadership and unwavering commitment to serving the community. Over the years, she has been instrumental in addressing critical needs such as food security, youth programming, and senior support. Gloria’s tireless efforts have touched many lives, including vulnerable seniors and families in need.
Nancy Henry, a local councilor, shared a moving story about Gloria’s impact. Recalling an event where DCAG distributed food to low-income seniors, Henry highlighted the dignity and compassion with which the organization operates. “The tears of gratitude I witnessed that day remind us of the difference DCAG makes,” she said. “This is God’s work being done right here in our community.”
The event also featured remarks from community advocate Alison Hector, who underscored the importance of uplifting marginalized communities and ensuring that opportunities are accessible to all. Hector commended DCAG for “filling the gaps” where support is most needed.
A major highlight of the evening was the announcement of a five-year partnership between DCAG and Durham College. This milestone agreement will provide placement opportunities for students to support DCAG’s operations, further enhancing the organization’s capacity to serve the community.
As the evening drew to a close, Gloria expressed her gratitude to all who contributed to the event’s success. “Your support means more families will be touched,” she said. “We are making a difference, especially for our seniors and youth.”
