Marilyn Crawford, Chair of Durham Region Transit’s Executive Committee, expressed excitement about the funding. “This investment is essential for addressing record ridership levels and aligning our transit service with other GTHA municipalities. Over the next decade, we aim to significantly improve service levels while advancing our clean energy goals.”
DRT has embarked on a clean bus transition journey, with a vision to operate a fully zero-emission fleet by 2037. A key milestone was reached last year when the first six electric buses hit the road. Plans are in place to introduce 18 more this year, further solidifying Durham’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change.
Key dignitaries present at the announcement included Mark Holland, MP for Ajax and Canada’s Minister of Health, and Ryan Turnbull, MP for Whitby and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry and Finance. Both emphasized the federal government’s commitment to sustainable and inclusive transit solutions.
Durham Region, the largest geographical area in the GTHA—four times the size of Toronto—is focused on creating reliable and affordable transit options. The ambitious 10-year strategy aims to enhance service levels, connect communities, and support the region’s growing population and business sector.
“Investments like today’s, paired with strong federal partnerships, enable us to build a transit network that meets the demands of the future,” said Crawford. “We are focused on delivering a sustainable, reliable, and accessible transit system for all.”
As the region moves forward with its ambitious plan, the collaboration between municipal and federal governments underscores the importance of shared goals in achieving a greener, connected future for Durham Region.
