Durham Hosts Together We Rise Black History Month Celebration

Dr. Andrew B. Campbell

Durham Region is set to host an inspiring Black History Month celebration with Together We Rise Durham: Resistance, Resilience, Possibility. The event will take place on Wednesday February 5, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m., at the Audley Recreation Centre in Ajax. Organized by The Regional Municipality of Durham in collaboration with several community partners, the celebration aims to honour individuals who have advanced the well-being of the Black community and foster important conversations about equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI).

The evening’s highlight will be keynote speaker Dr. Andrew B. Campbell, affectionately known as Dr. ABC. A respected educator, speaker, and advocate for equity and inclusion, Dr. Campbell will deliver an address exploring themes of resistance, resilience, and possibility within the Black community. His speech will encourage attendees to reflect on personal and systemic biases, the importance of representation, and the collective responsibility to foster inclusive spaces in schools, workplaces, and communities.

The event will also feature captivating performances that celebrate the rich cultural heritage and contributions of Black Canadians. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions about creating environments where everyone feels a genuine sense of belonging.

Together We Rise Durham is made possible through the support of event partners, including Durham Regional Police Service, Canadian Jamaican Club of Oshawa, Pickering Anti-Black Racism Taskforce, and others. It is partly funded by TC Energy.

Black History Month is a time to honor the achievements of Black Canadians while continuing the fight against anti-Black racism. This event provides a unique opportunity for community members to come together, learn, and celebrate.

Everyone is welcome to attend, and refreshments will be provided. To register and stay updated, visit the event’s official website.

Durham Region invites the community to join in this important celebration of resistance, resilience, and possibility.
