Elevation Pictures Toronto: from festival presence to awards powerhouse
By Janet Grant
“From Best Picture to Best Animated Feature, Elevation Pictures’ slate drew recognition across every major Academy category.”
Elevation Pictures has quietly established itself as one of Canada’s most influential film distributors. Founded in 2013 in Toronto by Laurie May and Noah Segal, the company made a strong showing at TIFF50 and earned major recognition. Its films received nominations for the Golden Globe Awards, Critics’ Choice Awards, and Academy Awards, among others.
The 2025–2026 awards season has reinforced Elevation’s reputation for distributing acclaimed films. A strong TIFF50 roster and subsequent recognition at the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice Awards, and the 98th Academy Awards marked a significant moment for the Toronto-based company.
While TIFF50 increased Elevation Pictures’ visibility, the true impact is seen in the lasting success of many of their films after the festival. Several releases have become major award contenders. This highlights Elevation’s talent for selecting prestige cinema that unites artistic aspiration with broad audience appeal.
Among Elevation’s recent slate is ‘Marty Supreme’, which earned nine Oscar nominations. These include Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Casting. This level of recognition reflects Elevation’s commitment to supporting films where every department can shine. The film has received excellent reviews throughout this year’s awards season.
Beyond Marty Supreme, Elevation Pictures distributed other films that premiered or screened at TIFF50 and subsequently entered the awards conversation. Other Elevation Pictures nominated films include Sentimental Value; One Battle After Another; The Secret Agent; It Was Just an Accident; Sirāt; and Arco. These films secured nominations and awards at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice in performance, screenplay, and technical categories. Elevation’s 2025/2026 slate demonstrates a clear curatorial identity with character-driven stories and bold directorial visions. The films also depend on audience interaction.
A notable number of Elevation Pictures titles have appeared across major awards, which a small group of global studios usually dominates. Elevation signals a shift: Canadian distributors are now shaping the conversation, not just participating.
Elevation Pictures also serves as a bridge between international filmmakers and North American audiences, championing films that might struggle for attention. The company ensures bold, original voices find a place in the market. Awards provide both validation and increased exposure.
As the 98th Academy Awards near, Elevation Pictures is not just an emerging force but a strong force. Elevation’s representation across many categories and recognition for art and execution make the company a tastemaker in today’s cinema. While TIFF50 was a milestone, Elevation has truly arrived as an awards-season player.
