Jamaica’s airlift from Canada received a timely boost this winter with the launch of a new nonstop service by Flair Airlines between Toronto Pearson International Airport and Montego Bay, reinforcing the island’s recovery momentum and strengthening ties with one of its most important tourism markets.

The inaugural flight touched down at Sangster International Airport on Thursday, December 18, marking Flair’s newest Caribbean route. The occasion was formally celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Councillor Richard Vernon, Mayor of Montego Bay, alongside senior tourism and aviation officials, including representatives of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association, the Jamaica Tourist Board, and the Airport Authority of Jamaica.
Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett welcomed the new service, noting its importance as Jamaica enters the peak winter travel season and continues to rebuild following the impact of a major Category 5 hurricane earlier in the year.
“This new route will strengthen the island’s airlift and provide more options for our Canadian visitors to come to our shores,” Bartlett said. “It also highlights the confidence our airline partners continue to have in Jamaica as a destination. Jamaica is open for business and ready to welcome visitors.”
The route, which operates up to twice weekly, increases seat capacity from Canada at a critical time for the tourism sector. Officials say the added connectivity aligns with Jamaica’s broader tourism strategy focused on market diversification, resilience, and long-term growth, particularly as the island works toward its 2030 performance targets.
“This flight is truly meaningful in the context of getting back on track with our new KPIs for Jamaica’s tourism by 2030,” Bartlett added.
Canada remains one of Jamaica’s most reliable and resilient source markets, a point underscored by the continued expansion of air service despite recent challenges. Donovan White, Director of Tourism, emphasized that improved accessibility is central to sustaining winter arrivals.
“This new nonstop service from Toronto supports our winter growth strategy by making it even easier for Canadians to choose Jamaica for their holiday travel,” White said.
Angella Bennett, Regional Director for Canada at the Jamaica Tourist Board, echoed those sentiments, expressing gratitude for Flair’s commitment during a recovery period for the destination.
“We are truly grateful for this service not just during our peak season but following the passage of Hurricane Melissa,” Bennett said. “We will continue working with our airline partners to increase airlift between both countries.”
Tourism officials say the launch reflects ongoing collaboration with airline partners to expand connectivity, stimulate demand, and keep Jamaica top of mind for Canadian travellers seeking sun, culture, and world-class hospitality this winter and beyond.
