Former MPP Rod Phillips Honored by Supporters in Ajax

Kandy Samsundar and Rod Phillips

In a heartfelt gathering on Thursday, July 11, approximately fifty supporters of former MPP Rod Phillips came together at Ms. Kandy Samsundar’s home in Ajax to bid him a proper farewell. Phillips, who served as the MPP for Ajax, made an abrupt exit from provincial politics a few years ago, leaving many of his supporters without the chance to say goodbye.

Phillips entered public life as a star candidate for the Provincial Conservative party during the election. His tenure in government was marked by a series of significant roles, starting with the Ministry of Environment. He then moved on to oversee two of the most crucial departments: the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Long-Term Care, the latter being his final role before his departure from politics.

The farewell event was a day filled with nostalgia and gratitude, as attendees reminisced and expressed their appreciation for all that Phillips had accomplished for Ajax. Reflecting on his decision to leave politics, Phillips had previously told the Caribbean Camera that in politics, if one does not aim for the top job, there are three options: to go down in disgrace, to be rejected by the people, or to resign in time to allow the party to find a suitable replacement. Phillips chose the latter, ensuring a smooth transition for his party.

School board trustee Patrice Barnes emerged as the best person to fill Phillips’ shoes. Barnes was nominated by the Progressive Conservative Party and went on to win in Ajax, continuing the work that Phillips had started.

During the gathering, Phillips expressed his gratitude to the attendees for their support. He noted that, true to Caribbean culture, any invitation for lunch could turn into a lively celebration. Phillips shared that he missed the people of Ajax and cherished the time he spent representing them.

Since leaving politics, Phillips has transitioned into the corporate world and is now an executive at an investment bank in Toronto. The day was highlighted by a lavish Caribbean buffet, complemented by the melodic sounds of Andy Phillips on the steelpan and an array of desserts. The event was a fitting tribute to a public servant who left a lasting impact on his community.
