Ghana Funds Monument Honouring Jamaica Connection

Ghana will underwrite the construction of a monument in Jamaica intended to mark centuries of connection between Africa and its diaspora, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. The structure is to be placed at the Seville Heritage Park in St Ann and will stand as a public reminder of African solidarity and shared history.

The minister said Ghanaian officials are already preparing to work alongside Jamaican partners to move the project forward. He indicated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defence in Ghana will engage local authorities in Jamaica as planning and implementation begin.

Ablakwa made the announcement while attending a welcome reception and guided visit at the Seville Great House during an official tour of the island by a Ghanaian delegation. He told guests that the site carried meaning that went beyond architecture or diplomacy.

“This is not an ordinary visit for me,” he said, describing Seville as a place layered with memory and spirit. He reflected on the transformation of the location from a setting of oppression to one of return and recognition.

“Some centuries ago we would not have been allowed anywhere near these walls, but today we have returned as owners of this building, as owners of this land, and as the truthful and rightful custodians of every possession here,” Ablakwa said.

He praised Jamaica for initiatives that honour African ancestors, pointing in particular to the repatriation and respectful burial of an enslaved African woman whose remains were sent back to Ghana.

“You brought back one of our own and made sure she returned and has been buried,” the minister said, calling the act a powerful symbol of reconnection.
