An early morning delay did little to slow the excitement as thousands of revellers and spectators gathered for the 2026 Flow 5G+ Grand Kadooment, with colourful bands, elaborate costumes and pulsating music transforming the Princess Alice Highway into a celebration of Barbadian culture.

Formal proceedings began at 8.40 a.m. when the National Anthem echoed across the parade route. The Walk Holy Band then became the first of 22 presentations to cross the judging stage, opening the festivities with a spiritual performance that sought divine blessings for the day’s activities.

The cultural showcase continued with Blue Box Cart and Salt, whose presentation honoured the Barbados Landship and its role in preserving one of the island’s enduring traditions. Krave followed with an energetic display that immediately lifted the atmosphere.

One of the biggest attractions was the return of the traditional King and Queen costumes. Presented by the NCF Large Mas Costumes and accompanied by the Drummers Federation, the display featured “Keeper of the Canes,” “Queen of Crop Over,” and “Mr Harding’s Fiery March.” The elaborate creations drew enthusiastic applause from both locals and visitors, many recalling the days when such costumes led every Grand Kadooment parade.

Vida by Esquire made one of the strongest impressions with more than 1 000 masqueraders divided into six sections. The band took almost 10 minutes to pass the judges before continuing towards the Mighty Grynner Highway.

There were occasional pauses between presentations as spectators waited for the next band. NCF Festival and Events Planner Stacia Bryan explained that the delays were linked to revellers taking extra time to perfect their appearance.

“You know us ladies, we like to make sure that the make up is on and the eyelashes are on,” Bryan said. She added that the popularity of Pretty Mas and social media had encouraged participants to spend more time preparing, noting, “The bands are here and ready and we have had a smooth Grand Kadooment.”

Bryan said half of the registered bands had already crossed the judging point by midday and praised the event’s organisation.

“I am very pleased with the productions. Everything has been moving smoothly along the streets. All of the water stations are in place. The revellers are well hydrated, the music trucks are moving and comfortable because the police and the BDF are on the ground to make sure we have a safe Grand Kadooment,” she said.

As temperatures climbed, revellers and spectators sought relief with sno cone vendors, portable fans and water bottles while the parade continued. Costumes from Aura, Colorz Entertainment, Haus of Mas and Mondé Mas captivated judges and onlookers with displays of feathers, beads and sequins.

Veteran bandleader Betty West presented a 158 member small band honouring the memories of Winston Jones, Renee Ratcliff, Gwyneth Squires, Roseann Lewis and Reggie Cave for their lasting contributions to Crop Over.

The final presentation, Fifth Element, crossed the judging stage shortly after 1 p.m., bringing the official judging to an end before revellers continued dancing and making their way towards the Mighty Grynner Highway for the remainder of the celebrations.
