Grenadian Prodigy Renniel Gilbert Becomes Youngest Chess Master

Renniel Gilbert

At just 17 years old, Grenadian chess prodigy Renniel Gilbert has made history by achieving the prestigious title of FIDE Master (FM) at the 45th Budapest Chess Olympiad. In a remarkable showcase of talent and perseverance, Gilbert, who entered the tournament as an unrated player, became one of only 23 individuals to earn the FM title among over 2,000 competitors from 197 countries.

The FIDE Master title is the third-highest ranking in chess, following the International Master and Grandmaster titles. Gilbert’s accomplishment is particularly noteworthy as he bypassed the Candidate Master title entirely. His performance was exceptional, winning seven out of ten matches, including victories against two FIDE Masters and one Candidate Master.

A student at the T.A. Marryshow Community College (TAMCC) and the reigning Grenadian National Chess Champion, Gilbert has firmly established his place in Grenada’s sporting history. His success not only propels his own chess career but also represents a significant achievement for Grenada on the global chess stage.

As Gilbert returns home tomorrow, the nation is preparing to celebrate him as a national hero. His triumph highlights the increasing strength of Caribbean players in international chess and heralds a promising new chapter for chess in Grenada.

Renniel Gilbert’s ascent to FIDE Master at such a young age suggests a bright future for both him and the sport in Grenada.
