Sir Clive Lloyd to Lead Guyana Cricket Academy Initiative

Guyana’s cricketing future has received a major boost with the announcement of the Guyana Cricket Academy, set to be led by legendary West Indies cricketer Sir Clive Lloyd. The news, revealed by Minister of Sport Charles Ramson Jr., is seen as a major step towards developing the next generation of cricketing talent in the country.

At a year-end review, Minister Ramson provided details about the academy’s progress. He confirmed that the facility will be located at the Good Hope site on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD), where groundwork is already underway to prepare the site for its new purpose.

“We’ve started clearing the area, and I’m excited to announce that Sir Clive Lloyd has agreed to take a lead role in the execution and operationalization of the Cricket Academy,” Minister Ramson stated. “We expect to finalize a contract with him within the next week or two.”

Sir Clive Lloyd, one of the most iconic figures in the history of West Indies cricket, brings decades of experience and expertise to this project. His involvement is seen as a turning point in Guyana’s efforts to nurture world-class cricket talent. The Sports Minister emphasized the importance of cricket to Guyana, describing it as the nation’s “lead sport” and a central pillar of its athletic identity.

Ramson also took the opportunity to address the need for significant investment in cricket, stressing that the future of the sport in Guyana hinges on such commitments. “People often ask why we are investing so much in cricket,” he said. “But without investment, how can we expect to produce players? It’s essential. Without investment, we would not have the infrastructure and programs necessary to develop our cricketers.”

The Minister acknowledged the historical neglect of infrastructure and player development, which had contributed to the decline of West Indies cricket over the years. “For too long, there was a lack of focus on player development,” Ramson explained. “There was a lot of management and politics, but not enough was done to support the foundational growth of players.”

The establishment of the Guyana Cricket Academy addresses this gap by providing a comprehensive platform for the development of elite cricketers. The academy will offer state-of-the-art facilities, world-class coaching, and a structured environment for young athletes to hone their skills. This initiative is particularly timely, as Guyana has produced several outstanding players currently representing the West Indies on the international stage.

The Academy’s creation is part of a broader effort to revamp Guyana’s cricketing infrastructure, positioning the country as a leader in Caribbean cricket once again. With Sir Clive Lloyd at the helm, the Cricket Academy is poised to become a vital institution for cricket development, ensuring that future generations of cricketers have the resources and support they need to excel at the highest level.

This announcement has generated widespread excitement, with many seeing it as a positive step towards restoring West Indies cricket to its former glory and securing Guyana’s place at the forefront of the sport in the region.
