Hamilton police are seeking help identifying a person believed to have placed neo Nazi and anti Black stickers on a community property in the city’s east end.

The Hamilton Police Service Hate Crime Unit released images Monday as investigators examine the June 13 incident at 51 Adair Ave. S. Police said the activity occurred between 9 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. and is being investigated as hate related mischief.

Police said allegations involving bias, prejudice or hate are investigated thoroughly and, where warranted, presented to the courts as aggravating factors during sentencing.

The property is occupied by Solidarity Place Worker Education Centre, which rents space to community organisations. Aaron Carr, the centre’s executive director, said staff discovered about 10 stickers the following day after a group arrived for a meeting.

Carr said the material included racist imagery and symbols associated with neo Nazi ideology. Security footage reportedly showed a masked individual placing the stickers on the building.

“The thing that’s really alarmed us is how targeted this action was,” Carr said.

The organisation later found threatening words scratched into a side door, Carr said.

He also described a confrontation the following day involving an estimated 15 to 20 people whom he identified as far right white nationalists.

A June 22 social media statement from Solidarity Place, Ward 4 Coun. Tammy Hwang’s office, the Hamilton and District Labour Council and the Hamilton Anti Racism Resource Centre alleged that a white nationalist neo Nazi group had targeted the organisation.

The statement said members displayed banners containing racist messages, chanted racist slogans and made Nazi salutes outside the building.

The groups described the incident as an attack not only on workers and the labour movement, but also on Hamilton’s commitment to inclusion and mutual support. They said it represented an intimidation effort directed at racialized residents and people who support them.

Police are asking anyone who can help identify the person shown in the released images to contact investigators.
