Hope Lutheran Music Camp enlivens Scarborough kids’ summer

It’s summer time in the city! And Hope Lutheran Church located at 14 Centre Street in Scarborough hosts a very special and unique Music Camp for children aged 5 – 13. What started out 14 years ago as an opportunity for the children of the congregation to learn the basics of music theory and playing musical instruments, has now grown to embrace children from the community.
Once again this year, Hope Church will host the annual camp from July 14th to the 18th: 9-3pm daily with a concert presentation on Friday, July 18 in the afternoon for all. The children will have the opportunity to learn and play various musical instruments from professional teachers; these include the steelpan, ukulele, djembe drums, bucket drums, piano, recorders, boomwhackers, dance and of course making a great, joyful noise with their voice. This program is heavily subsidized by the Church and friends of the church. Registration cost for each child is $80 – a minimal contribution to the actual cost of operating the camp. These include rental of musical instruments, providing dry fit shirts for the kids, healthy snacks throughout the day and games equipment.

As can be appreciated, such an undertaking demands detail planning and execution, and as Camp Coordinator Wayne Owen says, “without an army of volunteers, we just couldn’t run this camp”. Last year, there were 135 registered kids with approximately 75 volunteers. According to Owen, “this camp fills up quickly, so if you are interested in registering your child or children, get on board now”.
It’s a fun camp! Kids @ our music fun summer camp make new friends, learn new skills and return to
