Jamaica Cruise Tourism Rebounds After Hurricane

Cruise arrivals in Jamaica rebound strongly after hurricane

Cruise activity in Jamaica is showing a rapid rebound less than a month after Hurricane Melissa disrupted operations across the island. Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett told business leaders in Ocho Rios on Thursday that eight ships have brought a combined thirty-two thousand passengers since the storm made landfall on October 28. He expects a similar number of visitors in the coming week, which would push the post hurricane total to sixty-four thousand.

Cruise lines return to Ocho Rios

Bartlett said the steady arrivals reflect the determination of the tourism sector to return to normal. According to the minister, the continuation of scheduled itineraries demonstrates that cruise partners have confidence in Jamaica’s ability to offer safe and reliable experiences. He noted that major attractions such as Dunn’s River Falls remain open, and he credited cooperation among tourism stakeholders for keeping the destination operating smoothly.

Cruise companies also signaled their commitment to the island. Beth Bodensteiner, president of Holland America Line, said her company was honoured to return to Ocho Rios and acknowledged the importance of tourism to the wider recovery effort. During the visit of the Zuiderdam on November 11, the vessel delivered five thousand boxes of relief supplies, and about thirty crew members joined Chukka Caribbean Adventures in cleanup efforts in Seville St Ann.

Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, praised the resilience of Jamaicans and said Carnival would continue calls to the island. She highlighted the support provided to Jamaican crew members working across the company’s fleet.

Recent calls by Royal Caribbeans Rhapsody of the Seas and other ships have added to the momentum, reinforcing the impression that the sector is stabilizing after the storm. As Bartlett put it, tourism in Jamaica is back on track, and the confidence shown by cruise lines underscores the industrys role in the country’s ongoing recovery.
