Jamaica names new coach in run-up to football World Cup
Jamaica’s senior men’s football team will enter next year’s intercontinental World Cup playoffs under new leadership, after the Jamaica Football Federation confirmed that Rudolph Speid will guide the Reggae Boyz through a decisive period in their qualifying campaign. The announcement was made Friday, bringing clarity to a programme unsettled by recent changes in technical staff.

Speid, who leads Cavalier FC and chairs the federation’s technical committee, will assume interim control of the national side on December 15. His mandate runs until March 31, 2026, a window that covers Jamaica’s preparation for and participation in the playoff round scheduled to take place in Mexico. The series will determine whether the country reaches the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He replaces Steve McClaren, the English coach who stepped down after Jamaica finished second in their CONCACAF final round, a placement sealed with a scoreless draw against Curaçao. The result pushed the team into the playoff path instead of securing direct qualification. McClaren’s departure prompted an internal review, which concluded with the decision to hand interim responsibilities to Speid.
In a statement, the federation said the move was designed to steady the programme rather than overhaul it. It noted that Speid’s appointment followed careful board deliberation and that discussions are underway with former assistant coach Miguel Coley to join the staff. The JFF said President Michael Ricketts views the interim arrangement as a means of maintaining stability during what it described as an important period for Jamaican football. The organisation added that further administrative matters are being addressed and that the goal remains clear: supporting a successful playoff run.

Coley, who previously served under Winfried Schaefer, recently signalled interest in returning to the national setup. If negotiations are finalized, he will join Speid on the touchline in March.
Speid is no stranger to the squad. He entered the national programme in mid 2025 as McClaren’s technical adviser, contributing opponent analysis and offering extensive knowledge of regional competition. His elevation to interim head coach had been widely expected once the federation began its search for continuity.
The Reggae Boyz now face a high pressure stretch as they attempt to secure a place on world football’s biggest stage. Speid takes charge at a moment defined by urgency and high stakes, with Jamaica’s hopes of qualification resting on a strong showing in the playoff round.
