Orville Etoria, a Jamaican national who had been detained in the Kingdom of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), was repatriated to the island on Monday with support from the International Organization for Migration.

The return follows coordinated diplomatic efforts led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, with key involvement from Jamaica’s High Commission in Pretoria, which is accredited to Eswatini. The Ministry confirmed that Orville Etoria’s return was managed in close collaboration with the Government of Eswatini and supported by the IOM.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, welcomed Etoria home, noting that the case highlights the importance of international partnerships and Jamaica’s diplomatic presence abroad. She acknowledged Etoria’s request for privacy and emphasized the government’s ongoing commitment to the welfare of Jamaicans overseas.

“We trust the Jamaican public will respect Mr Etoria’s wish for a quiet return,” said the Minister. “This case reinforces the value of global cooperation and the role of our diplomatic network in protecting citizens abroad.”

Representatives from the Ministry of National Security, which oversees the return of nationals, joined Foreign Ministry staff to receive Etoria upon his arrival.

Etoria had previously been deported from the United States and subsequently transferred to Eswatini in July. After reports of his detention surfaced, the Ministry maintained contact with both Etoria and his family while working toward his safe return.
