Jamaican Patty Day Returns to Union Station with Free Patties and Jamaica Getaway

Toronto’s long love affair with the Jamaican patty will once again take centre stage at Union Station as the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) hosts a lively pop-up celebration marking Jamaican Patty Day.
On Monday, February 23, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., commuters passing through the Bay Kiosk at Union Station will be treated to free authentic Jamaican patties, courtesy of a partnership between the JTB and Roywoods. While supplies last, Torontonians will be able to savour one of the city’s most beloved Caribbean staples — and enter for a chance to win a trip to Jamaica.
This year’s festivities commemorate the 41st anniversary of the historic 1985 “Patty Wars,” a defining moment in Toronto’s culinary and cultural history. In that year, Jamaican patty vendors successfully challenged a ruling that would have prevented them from using the term “beef patty,” arguing that the name was intrinsic to their cultural identity and culinary heritage. The community’s victory on February 23, 1985, cemented the patty’s place in Toronto’s food landscape and led to the annual recognition of Jamaican Patty Day.
Angella Bennett, Regional Director for Canada at the Jamaica Tourist Board, said the event celebrates not just a popular snack but a powerful story of cultural pride and resilience.
“From the historic Patty Wars of 1985 to today, Jamaicans have been making their mark on Toronto’s culinary landscape for decades,” Bennett said. “There’s no doubt Torontonians are incredibly passionate about Jamaica’s iconic snack food. On February 23, we welcome everyone in the city to sample a true taste of our island and pick up some patties in honour of Jamaican Patty Day.”
For the founders of Roywoods, the collaboration offers an opportunity to connect culture, community and cuisine in one of Canada’s busiest public spaces.
“We are incredibly excited to partner with the Jamaica Tourist Board to celebrate a day that holds so much history and cultural significance,” they said in a joint statement. “This event is a fantastic opportunity for us to bring the authentic, vibrant flavours of Jamaica directly to the people of Toronto. We can’t wait to share our passion for Caribbean cuisine and celebrate the community that makes this day so special.”

Beyond the food, organizers promise an immersive island experience, with vibrant visuals and music transforming the midday commute into a brief escape to the Caribbean. Visitors will also have the opportunity to learn more about the Patty Wars and the broader story of Jamaican influence in the city.
The on-site contest for a trip to Jamaica adds an extra layer of excitement. One lucky attendee will win a getaway to the island known for its beaches, music, and globally celebrated cuisine.
Founded in 1955 and headquartered in Kingston, the Jamaica Tourist Board is Jamaica’s national tourism agency, with offices in Montego Bay, Miami, Toronto and London, among others. The destination continues to earn global recognition. In 2025, TripAdvisor ranked Jamaica among the world’s top honeymoon, culinary and cultural destinations, while the World Travel Awards named it the World’s Leading Cruise Destination and World’s Leading Family Destination for the fifth consecutive year.
Media representatives are invited to attend the pop-up to capture photos, video and interviews with key spokespeople, including Bennett, who will be available to discuss the history of Jamaican Patty Day and the Board’s ongoing efforts to promote Jamaican culture in Canada.
For many Torontonians, however, the celebration is simpler: a warm patty in hand, a reminder of community resilience, and a shared taste of the island — right in the heart of the city.
