The ceremony, held to coincide with Saint Lucia’s 47th Independence Day celebration on February 22, saw the stamp launched as part of a new series designed to celebrate Julien Alfred’s historic Olympic victories and her impact on the country’s sporting legacy.

Alfred, who etched her name into Olympic history by winning gold in the women’s 100 metres at the 2024 Paris Games in a national record time of 10.72 seconds, and silver in the 200 metres, was not present in person but joined the event virtually.

“To be honoured by my island in this way is deeply humbling,” Alfred said in her virtual address. “This place shaped me into who I am: my values, my strength, and my dreams. I accept this not just for myself, but as a symbol honouring the strength of a united community. I’ll always carry my island with pride.”

Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre, speaking at the launch, explained that the design of the stamp will be incorporated into the official philatelic collection of Saint Lucia and transitioned from a one-off tribute to a definitive everyday postage stamp, ensuring Alfred’s story becomes a permanent part of daily life on the island.

“Every envelope that bears her image will tell a story of a small island nation that produces world-class talent,” said Minister of Education, Youth Development, and Sports Kenson Casimir. “It is a powerful message to our youth that excellence will be recognised and that hard work and opportunity can elevate Saint Lucians to stand amongst the best in the world.”

The commemorative series aims to capture key moments from Alfred’s athletic journey, from her record-breaking wins to the pride she has brought to Saint Lucia and the wider Caribbean. The transition to a daily stamp is intended to reflect her enduring place in the nation’s cultural memory.

Across the region, reaction to the tribute has been warmly supportive, with commentators noting that Alfred’s rise has inspired many young athletes and placed Saint Lucia prominently on the world sporting map.
