Trinidad and Tobago’s San Fernanda Skinner’s Park was in pandemonium as fast-rising chutney soca artist KI aka Krisi Persad and his band won 2016 Chutney Soca Monarch, the third time the Canadian-based star has taken the crown.
KI won in 2012 and 2014 while in 2015 he was dethroned by Ravi B. This time, he left Nishard M in second and Ravi B and Rikki Jai in third and fourth respectively.
With the crown, KI takes home TT$1 million (about Cdn$250,000).
“When deh asking me, how a living so nice? I never with the same gyal twice,” KI sang in his Same Gyal Twice.
While KI performed last in the competition, he worked the massive crowd calling on them to do the KI Dance.
He was awarded 499 points by the judges.
In an interview with The Camera KI said of his win, “It’s wonderful. I would like to thank all my fans for the support.”
His magnificent performance included an ambience of African and East Indian dance with a tinge of Chinese Dragon enveloped by a Carnival costume.
It’s a remarkable accomplishment for a young man who started singing just six years ago.
Now an international performer, he is booked for gigs in Trinidad and Tobago Carnival then shows in numerous places including, Guyana, Clash of Titans, Orlando and Toronto on Easter Friday at Mirage Banquet Hall.
With his Single Forever in 2012, he got the attention of the music industry. And at his first solo concert in 2013 I Am KI, he fused his talent as a musician, singer and bandleader.
