The Markham African Caribbean Canadian Association (MACCA) will host its 38th Annual Scholarship Awards Gala on Friday, November 8, at the Angus Glen Golf Club (10080 Kennedy Road, Markham). The long-running event continues its proud tradition of recognizing academic excellence and community leadership among students of African and Caribbean heritage in York Region.

This year, MACCA will present 22 scholarships, each valued at $1,000, to deserving students who hav ber of awards varies each year, depending on the volume of qualified applicants and the generosity of community sponsors, said past president Lisa-Joy Facey.
“Many of our donors prefer to remain behind the scenes, but their support is what keeps this program thriving,” said MACCA’s immediate past president, who has overseen the organization’s transition in leadership. “These scholarships ensure that our young people are seen, valued, and celebrated for their hard work and potential.”
A highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the President’s Award, a special honour recognizing a student who embodies academic excellence, leadership, and deep community commitment. The recipient’s name will be revealed at the event.
More than 300 guests are expected to attend, including York Region dignitaries such as Minister Hutch Hudson, York Region CEO Eric Jolliffe, and representatives from both the Catholic and public school boards. Entertainment will feature a 45-piece orchestra from the Crawford Adventist Academy, and Marlon Palmer of 98.7 FM will serve as master of ceremonies.
The event, which began nearly four decades ago, was created to ensure that Black students in York Region receive recognition often overlooked in mainstream educational settings. “For our community to grow stronger, we must invest in our children,” the MACCA representative emphasized. “When we show up for them, we show the world how much they matter.”
The annual gala remains one of the region’s most anticipated celebrations of Black excellence, unity, and the power of community support.
