Retired Executive Runs for Ajax Council

Malcolm Barrington, after having a successful career in fields such housing, telecommunications and finance, retired to spend more time with his family.

Although describing himself as “happily’’ retired and “not looking for a job’’, Barrington is coming out of retirement to serve residents of the Town of Ajax, where he has lived for 31 years.

He’s one of half-dozen candidates vying for the Ward 1 council seat in Ajax.

“It’s a good place to live, but there is always room for improvement and I feel I can do that,’’ said Barrington, who is canvassing voters and has expressed optimism at winning the Ajax council seat.

“I’m definitely optimistic but I’m not taking anything for granted,’’ Barrington, who holds an MBA in international finance, told The Caribbean Camera.

“I’m knocking on doors constantly and have had fantastic responses so far.’’

Barrington, a former Guyana Defence Force officer with an MBA in international finance, left the country for England, where he pursued post-secondary, receiving a degree in economics from the University of London.

In 1995, he moved to Canada and, with his wife, raised a son that’s now a police officer.

“I’ve lived in the same house in Ajax since 1995 October,’’ said Barrington, who worked more than 15 years with Toronto Community Housing Corporation.

During his employment career, he also held telecommunications and housing jobs in British Columbia.

“I, and my team, moved over 900 people out of a park in Vancouver into homes, without any force from the police,’’ said Barrington, adding that homelessness is something that’s “creeping up in Ajax’’ that he would seek to address if elected in Ward 1.

The polls in Ajax will form part of the municipal elections across Ontario scheduled for October.

Barrington, a former chair of the Ajax Anti-Racism Task Force, is running a campaign that he says is based on “committed leadership, proven service and a stronger future for Ajax’’.

Should he be elected in October, Barrington promises that among the things on which he will focus are providing greater assistance to seniors and more mental support services for children.

He also intends to address “community safety’’ issues, as well as people’s concern about “affordability’’.

“I want to improve community safety, both from a vehicular sense and a property sense,’’ Barrington explained.

“Affordability is a key thing that people are talking about,’’ he said. “But when I say affordability, what I mean is spending our tax dollars more efficiently. I’m not saying that I’m going to reduce your taxes but I can ensure that it’s spent more efficiently.’’

According to Barrington, seeking elected political office for the first time is his way of giving back to Ajax.

“I decided to run because now is the time for me to give back. I’m still fit enough and energized; I have the level of experience and intelligence and education background that I feel the town can benefit from immensely, and I don’t want that to go to waste,’’ said Barrington.

“I have benefitted from a lot of the services that the town provides. I want to be able to give back to the town that I have gained so much from.’’
